Yonder Hill Winery

Yonder Hill Winery

About 15 kilometers from Stellenbosch, on the slow, meandering road that leads to Somerset West, lies a piece of land that is as peaceful and as tranquil as it is in unison with its surrounds.

Yonder Hill Winery nestles, in cosy comfort, against the lower slopes of the magnificent Helderberg and from the farmland's threshold to its northernmost pinnacle, high against its towering heights, it embraces breathtaking views that stretch across the width of False Bay to the furthest-flung beacon of Table Mountain.

You will want to stop at Yonder Hill; not only after you first saw the huge and inviting gates that lead to the welcoming homestead, but even more, when you have left in your wake a beauty that beckons your return.

And when you stop to think about it, you will realise it was more than natural splendour that called you once again. There's a spirit here of kindred fellowship, of friends and of family and of workers too, so close as to be one. And so close as to be one with the beauty that surrounds them.

Yonder Hill covers some 13 hectares of rich Oakleaf and Clovelly soil. Vineyards are planted, predominantly, on the northern slopes of the farm and comprise three main cultivars: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot feature as well.

Maritime breezes in the early afternoon greatly influence the ripening process and the grapes are harvested as long as three weeks later than they are in Stellenbosch, a short distance away.

The cellar built in 1993, was greatly modernised four years later. Barrels, of French oak, are kept underground to allow for gravity-feeding and the cellar can house up to 800 of these containers, each with a capacity of 225 litres. All three red wines produced at Yonder Hill - the Inanda, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon - are matured here, while the Chardonnay ferments in stainless steel tanks.

There is nothing as symbolic of the close ties of Yonder Hill's Naude's with their friends and workers as the annual ceremony of the blessing of the harvest. It is a time-honoured occasion, traditionally held each March and graced as much with humility as it is with joy.

A prayer, simple and sincere, is followed by the first trampling, in huge barrels, of the ripened berries. This very moment marks the end of the picking season while it simultaneously rings in the start, once more, of a new cycle of harvesting, bringing with it the fresh expectations.

Between 18 months and two years, nature will be allowed to follow her own methodology, her unwavering and unique course towards complete perfection of every wine that is formed, once more, on Yonder Hill wine estate.
