Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Vergenoegd Wine Estate

The same coastal winds that cool the vineyards of Vergenoegd since the 1700's still blow today, together with an interesting combination of soils, give this historic estate its unique terroir and characterful red wines.

Vergenoegd with its Cape Dutch architecture is a beautiful sight to behold as it lies roughly midway between Table Mountain and the Hottentots- Holland range to the east and west, and between False Bay and Stellenbosch to the south and north.

Vergenoegd has been owned by the Faure family for six generations. Historic "Vergenoegd", the Dutch word meaning "satisfaction has been achieved", was granted land rights in 1696 and the Faures have been on the farm since the 1820's. The Cape Dutch homestead is a historic monument and dates from 1773. The business is now in the capable hands of John Faure as Winemaker.

The charming old world cellar is equipped with modern winemaking machinery and in its cool interior wines lie quietly maturing in new French 300 litre oak barrels. The estates soil profile which varies from alluvial loam to sand with yellow clay and calcareous layers, probably of marine origin, together with other factors such as cooler maritime climate, modern and attentive vineyard management, a minimalist approach to irrigation, selective harvesting and non-invasive vinification result in full-bodied, rich red wines reflecting the unique maritime terroir of Vergenoegd.

Vergenoegd, one of the first Estates to bottle their own wine since 1972, has always been known for the consistent quality of their wines. Up to now only a small quantity of the Estates production was bottled under the label of the Estate.

John Faure and the Strauss family, represented by Izak Strauss, joined forces in the year 2000 to unlock the huge potential of Vergenoegd in further stepping up the quality of the wines and expanding the international market. Today, 25% of the Estates production of 500—600 tons is bottled under the Vergenoegd label and the plan is to increase that number 50- 60% as the international market grows.

The Estate is approximately 600 hectares in total but only 90 hectares is planted with vines. Red wine is the focus of the Estate where winemaking has played a role during its entire existence. Cabernet Sauvignon is the cultivar which originally brought acclaim to the Estate and still features prominently. The wine was nominated five times as champion and four times as Grand Champion Wine. This success has continued through the years and today all the Vergenoegd wines are constantly awarded top ratings by both local and international wine connoisseurs.
