This historic 1791 Cape Dutch Home was the "last outpost" (literal translation of the farm's name) on the road between Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
Uiterwyk has been a De Waal family concern since 1864. Chris, Pieter and Daniël de Waal are the ninth generation of the family involved in winemaking in South Africa. The wines combine Old World finesse and New World abundant fruit.
In 1998, this modest family caused quite a stir by winning Wine Magazine's Pinotage Champion award (best out of 47). Daniël de Waal's innovative Cape Blend, using Pinotage as its crucial component, is the first Cape Blend in South Africa. Its complexity and intense fruit character recently received 4½ stars in the John Platter Wine Guide 2004.
Uiterwyk's wines are limited release only. Available at specialist wine shops, gourmet restaurants, or from buy from the farm itself.
