Overgaauw Wine Estate was founded in 1905 by Abraham van Velden on the well appointed Stellenbosch Valley farm owned by his family since 1783.
This family legacy was then handed on to Abrahams son David in 1945. In 1978 Braam van Velden succeeded his father David as the third generation owner winemaker on Overgaauw, making the Estate the longest established family-owned estate in the area.
Braam van Velden was born and grew up on Overgaauw. After matriculating from Paul Roos Gimnasium, he obtained his B.Comm. at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1972 he left for Germany to study Oenology and Viticulture at Geisenheim. He then returned to join his father David as winemaker.
Overgaauw comprises 140 hectares in the Stellenbosch Valley on the hillsides west of the well-known town. The Estates 70 hectare of sloping vineyards face south towards False Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. Their deep weathered granite soils and cool sea breezes all combine to create a micro-climate ideally suited to the cultivation of noble grape varieties.
Careful viticulture, low yields of excellent cultivars, the best wine-making and expert vinification enable Braam van Velden to create the exceptional wines of Overgaauw Wine Estate.
The old cellar has been expanded with stainless steel tanks and the best equipment. The latest developments include a small barrel maturation cellar, part of it underground, with a capacity of 1000 barrels.
