Onderkloof

Onderkloof is situated 20km east of Stellenbosch. The cellar lies just 6 km from the Atlantic Ocean on the slopes of the Schapenberg overlooking the historical town of Sir Lowry's Pass with spectacular views of False Bay and Cape Point.

Grapes are carefully selected and handpicked from vineyards which are not irrigated.

The old stable and shed have been converted into a wine cellar featuring the latest wine technology and equipment. All the grapes on the farm are vinified at the cellar. Traditional vinification and gentle handling give expression to the concentrated and individual wines of Onderkloof.

The wines are all bottled and labelled at the cellar, with a total production of 48 000 bottles.

Onderkloof's vineyards have been replaced over a period since 1989 and cover a total area of 33 ha. The white cultivators include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc and the red varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. Shiraz and Merlot plantings started in 2000. All grapes are selected and handpicked form vinification.

Naturally low yields and balanced vines ensure quality grapes.

The unique terrior of the vineyards is greatly influenced by the cool maritime breezes of False Bay.

The southerly aspect of the vines on the steep gradients vary from 8% to 20% together with the vineyards sea facing aspect, ensure maximum benefit from the cool sea breezes and reigning South Easer wind during the ripening season.

There are five structural types of soil, these are low vigour, stony, clay rich, well drained and deep. At the highest point, the vineyards are only 250 metres above sea level and 6km from the beaches of False Bay on the cool South Atlantic Ocean. The average rainfall is 700mm per annum and no irrigation is allowed.

Onderkloof is named after the original pass over the Hottentots Holland Mountain range. This pass is now a National Monument.
