Le Riche

Le Riche wines are produced in the Jonkershoek Valley outside Stellenbosch. The recently renovated (1996) cellar is situated on the farm "Leef op Hoop" (Live in Hope). A limited quantity of Cabernet grapes (50 tons) and Merlot (10 tons) is vinified. The wines are fermented in open fermenters under controlled conditions and, if necessary, also macerated on the skins after fermentation. Grapes are sourced mainly from the Jonkershoek area. Selection is based on soil type, aspect, viticultural practises and harvesting at optimal ripeness.

Etienne le Riche studied winemaking and viticulture at the university of Stellenbosch. After two years of wine research he joined Rustenberg wine estate in 1974 where he produced a range of award winning wines for many years. During this period he travelled to most of the wine producing areas of the world. In 1996 he left Rustenberg and started his new venture in Jonkershoek. His first wine, Le Riche Cabernet Reserve 1997, under his own name was an immediate success, local support base and are also exported. An alternate range of wines are also produced under the "Leef op Hoop" lable, a Cabernet and Cabernet/Merlot in an elegant, medium bodied style.

The le Riche surname, in this country, dates back to 1698 when the first French Huguenot with this surname arrived in the Cape from Thimarais in Normandy.

Etienne is married to Marcelle and they have a daughter, Yvonne and son Christo. They live in an historical homestead next to the cellar. Visitors to the cellar are welcome by prior appointment.
