Just 3km outside Stellenbosch in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Kleine Zalze forms part of the De Zalze Winelands and Golf Estate, combining superlative winemaking and hospitality with leisure and pleasure.

After an unforgettable wine tasting, enjoy Provencal - inspired country cuisine at our top Restaurant, Terroir. Sleep over at Kleine Zalze Lodges in four-star luxury and a round of golf at De Zalze Golf Course, one of the premier golf estates in South Africa.

In 1683 Nicholas Cleef from Germany, settled on a farm known as De Zalze. This was indicated by the 1692 census records, by which time 7000 vines had been planted.

Through the years, wine has been made on the farm by the different owners, which include some well-known South African families – Colyn, Krige, Du Toit and De Waal, until it was bought in 1968 by Gilbeys Pty. Ltd, an international wine merchant.

Kleine Zalze was bought in 1996 by Jan Malan, a grape farmer from Wellington, and his brother-in-law, Kobus Basson, a lawyer from Stellenbosch.

Jan is responsible for the vineyards of Kleine Zalze, his two farms near Wellington, and the two new ventures, one near Cape Agulhas and the other near Stanford. Kobus is responsible for the general management and administration of Kleine Zalze and heads up the dynamic marketing and sales team. Together, their vision is to begin a new era of family heritage.

Jan and Kobus' philosophy is underlined by a three-pronged strategy of nurturing and developing the components involved, namely the vineyards, the cellar and the people. At Kleine Zalze care has been lavished on the vines, the viticultural and production facilities, at all times recognizing the potential of the ideally located winery. In addition, there is a drive to focus on the people who work with Jan and Kobus advancing with an Educational and Development Trust, which is funded by Kleine Zalze to focus on the social issues of its employees.
