Jacobsdal

Jacobsdal

Jacobsdal wine estate is situated between Stellenbosch and Kuils River, on the slopes of the hills overlooking False Bay, which is less than 10 kilometers away. The estate lies on the extreme southwesterly edge of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin Region. The Dumas family has been making wine on the estate for three generations and the present owner and winemaker is Cornelis Dumas assisted by his son Hannes.

The estate is 260 hectares in size, of which 92 hectares are planted with vineyards. In all, 20 hectares are under Pinotage vines, grown at an altitude of 140m above sea-level. The soil of the vineyards has a gravely, sandy loam structure with yellow clay as a base. Good soil drainage and water-retention make it possible to produce quality grapes under absolute dry land conditions. Grown as bush vines, the grapes are cooled by the Southeaster from the coast in summer. The crop is limited by extensive pruning to ensure high quality grapes. The pruning technique is instrumental to the rich colour of Jacobsdal's award-winning Pinotage.

At Jacobsdal, something of the 'Old World' lives on. Here, farming is a creative act, and dedication to the soil and vine, a way of life. In character and style, Jacobsdal Pinotage also reflects Cornelis Dumas' belief that, as far as possible, wine must be made by hand, in the traditional way. The must is fermented in open tanks. No commercial yeast is used, and fermentation is allowed to develop spontaneously from the natural yeast cells on the skins. The must and skins are stirred with long wooden poles with crossbars - also by hand - to extract all the colour, flavour and tannin, thereby greatly enhancing the taste. his wine, which is racked on the lees, is matured in small casks of French oak for 18 months, and is allowed to settle in the bottle before being released.

The Pinotage variety is unique to South Africa. Jacobsdal Pinotage, a fine example of this variety, is produced from older vines, which lend character to the wine. It is wine of stature and complexity - particularly fruity, and an easy-drinking red wine with not too much tannin. Dry, medium-full and delicately rounded. The nose reveals spicy and delicate herbal notes. Elegant and velvety soft, with a rich bouquet so distinctive of the Pinotage cultivar. A solid streak of mulberry and oak spice persists, rounding off the wine beautifully.
