Dellrust Wines

Onder-Rustenburg, home to Dellrust wines, is a historical farm in the Helderberg area which the Bredell family started farming on over a hundred years ago.

Dellrust Wine Estate is situated on the northern slopes on a gradual incline. This position ensures up to 14½ hours of summer sun as well as the cool sea breeze from the nearby False Bay, both being important factors in producing exceptional wines. The 98 ha estate features an old but fully restored 4 bedroom homestead. It has large reception rooms typical of what you would expect from this historic era of architecture. The very first house on the farm, which was converted to the existing cellar in 1915, was enlarged and fully restored in 1998.

To some, a family tradition of winemaking that stretches back over a century may seem extraordinary. To us, it's simply the careful process of turning selected grapes into fine wines worthy of the name Dellrust. Albert Bredell is the fifth generation to pursue the proud family tradition of winemaking and the old cellar has been restored and modernised for producing quality red and white wines.

Onder-Rustenburg is planted with red varietals Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot and Ruby Cabernet. White plantings include Sauvignon Blanc. Presently only carefully selected part of the total harvest is vinified on Onder-Rustenberg and sold under the Dellrust label.

The vineyards have been divided into 24 blocks planted only with noble red and white cultivars. Most of the vines are between 5 and 25 years old, all are partly under irrigation from water from the river crossing the farm.

The rest of the white grapes are delivered directly to KWV. At the moment 400 000 litres of red wine and 20 000 of white wine are produced in the cellar. We bottle 6000 cases of wine per season and the rest is sold to KWV, we are well known for the production of high quality bulk wines. Future plans are to bottle 50% of our wine and sell 50% bulk wine. The existing capacity intake in the cellar is 550 tons red grapes and 30 tons white grapes.

In terms of the Platters Wine Ratings for the 2003 season, Merlot achieved 3.5 stars, Three Vines (Merlot-Pinotage-Shiraz blend) 4 stars, Vintage Port 3.5 stars, Chenin Blanc 3 stars, Chardonnay 3.5 stars, Tinta-Barocca Blend 3 stars. Very recently the 2002 young wines were entered at the S.A. Young Wine Show and received class winner trophies both for the Merlot 2002 and Shiraz 2002 young wines.
