Blaauwklippen's motto is "Inspired by the past, passionate about the future. Blaauwklippen is a historic wine estate, museum and it has an excellent restaurant.
Governor Simon van der Stel granted the estate, situated 4km from Stellenbosch along the Strand Road (R44), to a talented craftsman, Gerrit Visser, in 1690. Dirk Wouter Hoffman built the H-shaped Cape homestead, with thatched roof, “florid” gables and a stoep on three sides, in 1789. There is also a beautiful Jonkershuis displaying a fine “holbol” gable, curved roof beams and charming small windows. On the lower slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain, the Cellar master, Hein Hesebeck, has planted 15 cultivars from which his award winning wines are produced.
Some favourites are White Landau, 2003, a selected blend of Chardonnay and Semillon, characterized by hints of butterscotch and citrus fruit, fermented and matured in French Oak barrels. One other one that is tasty, was Muscat Ottonel, 2002, a delicate semi-sweet wine with floral and Muscat bouquet, hinting of pineapple and citrus blooms.
Visit this enchanting farm and browse through almost 300 years of Old Cape living. Fine wines are crafted from quality grapes grown on Blaauwklippen. Cape preserves and relishes prepared to original Old Cape Malay recipes are available in our Country Shop and sold during wine sales hours.
An extensive collection of antique Cape furniture, kitchen utensils and coaches are to view in our museum.
A function centre is available for weddings and birthdays, 100-150 people.
