Alluvia Wine Estate

Alluvia Wine Estate

Alluvia is a Boutique Wine Estate, outside Stellenbosch, meticulously working towards sharing our unique terrior by the creation of an internationally significant Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine Tastings are exclusively for guests whom are limited to 12 bottles per annum.

Tiny volumes of Sauvignon Blanc was produced to compliment the King of the noble's - Cabernet Sauvignon. Perched above the Banhoek Valley, in tranquil SOUTH AFRICA WINE COUNTRY, high above in the mountains of Stellenbosch, the Brugman family have established the exclusive "Vineyard Lifestyle". Here, 5 star Wine Estate Accommodation consists of individually appointed ultra premium suites (now also offering ADSL wireless connection ), each providing a private location with commanding views of the valley below. A moving experience. Alluvia Wine Estate offers luxury accommodation in the Stellenbosch Winelands complimented with private lessons on the PGA Golfgreen and Fly Fishing.

Wine lovers often speak of being able to taste the soils of a vineyard in a wine, often using terms such as minearllity. It's a wonderfully appealing idea to believe as it links the wine to the earth and makes the whole terroir concept understandable. Unfortunately it's not true.

Plant absorb the simple minerals they need from the soil, and using water, air and the energy from sunlight make many of the extraordinary range of compounds that we enjoy in wine. (The yeasts, barrels and other compounds used during the winemaking process also play a pivotal role in the fine wines composition) To reduce the exquisitely complex interaction of the vine and its environment to one of mere absorption of soil flavours is to demean the process.

This is not to say that soil does not affect the wine. It has a huge influence, but the effect is indirect and further influenced by the other aspects of the vines environment. Also wines may well taste earthy or minerally but again the effect is not direct but is influenced by the soil and winemaking practices

The best soils are those that encourage moderate growth in spring and that then dry out slowly so limiting berry growth after fruit set and encouraging the vine to stop active shoot growth at veraison. They need to be deep enough to buffer the vine against sudden heat spells, always supplying the vine with some water but water that the vine has to "work" for. Excellent drainage is essential

Very sandy soils tend to be schizophrenic in this regard supplying water too plentifully then almost as quickly drying out and overstressing the vines. Soils with more clay generally make wines with more depth of flavour. Alluvia is blessed in this regard. The soils all have excellent composition but sufficient variation to add subtle nuances of flavour to the different vineyards.

If you take a day trip to Cape Town, your options are endless. Most of our visitors choose between a cableway trip up Table Mountain, a visit to the Robben Island Museum and the Cape Point and Boulders Beach conservation areas. And be sure not to miss fabulous shopping at the famous V & A Waterfront. Of course, no visit to the Cape Winelands will be complete without a wine tour along the Stellenbosch or Franschhoek Wine Routes. We will gladly advise you further on activities that will suit your personal taste in the valley.
