Much attention has been paid to the gold of Egypt but few know about the golden creations south of the Sahara.
Our museum houses the most comprehensive collection of these treasures. It is now possible to glimpse thousands of years of legend, ritual & artistry that were so much a part of the gold-rich kingdoms of Africa. Each piece in the collection is steeped in symbolism so the visitor gains insight not only into the enormous power & wealth of West Africa's Akan kingdoms, but into the lives of the people who created the objects.
The original collection was assembled by Swiss art lover, Josef Mueller, over a fifty-year period. His daughter & son-in-law, Jean Paul Barbier, continued to build the collection after his death. The pieces were displayed in the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Switzerland until 2001 when it was bought by gold mining company, AngloGold Ashanti & brought back to Africa.
