The West Coast combines spectacular scenery with the best food the sea has to offer. Our three night tour appeals to those looking for a gastronomic feast with the fruits of the Atlantic ocean whilst taking in a rugged coastal and inland landscape highlighting nature, wildlife and food by some the West Coast's top chefs.
Schedule - Day 1Leave Cape Town and transfer to the entrance of the West Coast National Park. We start a tour of the park touring the landscape by bicycle which provides a perfect mix of coastal landscapes; unspoilt nature and the opportunity to see an exciting mix of birds including flamingos, pelicans, osprey, sandpipers' and many other wetland species of bird and is regaled as a prime global habitat. Other than birds, during the spring flower season the park bursts into a kaleadescope of colour followed by sweet smelling succulents and fynbos and flora and fauna year-round.
Mammals include Eland, Red Hartebeest, Caracal in addition to whale viewing along the coast of the park in season and schools of dolphins always being a possibility. We overnight at Flamingo Joe's Beach Camp and enjoy sundowners followed by a traditional seafood braai consisting of crayfish (lobster), a seafood potjie (delicious stew) and sumptious west coast wines (tressle table and seating). (vegetarian options available). After supper, we are joined by our local astronomer and his telescopes to look at the night skies of the southern hemisphere. (blankets to be provided around an open fire). Lanterns.
Schedule - Day 2After breakfast, we cycle to the park's main gate before we continue our trip in-land towards Clanwilliam, at the foot of the Cederburg Mountains and a town famed for its watersports on the banks of its impressive dam. Clanwilliam is the only place in the world where Rooibos tea is planted and cultivated and we cycle to a tea plantation to see its production at first hand.
Cycle onwards for a picnic lunch followed by a guided tour observing traditional rock art by the san people, which have withstood the test of time over thousands of years and who were the first inhabitants of the cape (a self-empowerment group, the Living landscape Project set up under the direction of Professor Parkington, one of the country's leading rock art experts). We cycle onwards through the breathtakingly stunning mountain roads of the Cederberg, passing small farming communities, orchards and onwards through the Karukareb Wilderness Reserve where we will enjoy an evening in the wilds of the mountains sleeping under the stars in luxury canvas colonial style tents overlooking the river.
Schedule - Day 3We head back to the coast and cycle along the coastal road from Elands Bay, a typical west coast small town to Shelley Point, arguably one of the most beautiful and quaint places to stay in the region.
En-route we have the option to partake in a fishing excursion with local fisherman to seek out our own catches for a shared braai on the beach. In spring this route is famous for the wild flowers and whaling (July-November) and dolphins during the summer months. Late afternoon we check into the five star Shelly Point Lodge and Spa where guests can enjoy a complimentary spa treatment or a round of golf on the exclusive 9-hole course.
Schedule - Day 4After breakfast and fully refreshed, we depart for a cycle ride to Paternoster, one of the last traditional fishing villages to be found on the West Coast. We stop here for a short time to savour the atmosphere and then cycle to Tittiesbaai Nature Reserve where we visit the Cape Columbine lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse to be built on the South African coastline.
In the reserve, we stop for our farewell picnic lunch overlooking stunning coastal scenery before heading back to Cape Town.
