8 Day Experience Namibia (BS-UBKC)

8 Day Experience Namibia (BS-UBKC)
Day 1 Cape Town

Sawubona! Welcome to South Africa.

An arrival transfer from the airport to the hotel is included in your tour. If you have confirmed this transfer by providing your flight details at least 15 days prior to departure you will be met on arrival and transferred to the joining point hotel.

You can arrive at any time on day 1 as there are no activities planned until the welcome meeting tonight. Your leader will leave a note at reception telling you where and when this important meeting will take place. Your leader will also check your passport and insurance details at this meeting.

After the group meeting there is the option of joining the group for dinner.

With its stunning coastline, dominating mountain, and modern cityscape, Cape Town is one of Africa's most attractive cities. Vineyards on its doorstep, adventure activities around every other corner and plenty of restaurants and cafes means there is something to appeal to everyone in this vibrant city.

Day 2 Lambert's Bay

Departing Cape Town we make our way along the west coast to the small seaside town of Lamberts Bay (370 km, approx. 3-4 hours). Dubbed the 'the diamond of the west coast' because of its white beaches, wild life and lobsters, Lamberts Bay is a quaint little town that is easily explored on foot.

In the afternoon we visit Cape Gannet Island to view the spectacular flocks of gannet before heading out for traditional west coast seafood for dinner.

Day 3 Orange River

We leave the coast and South Africa behind and head north west, crossing the border to Namibia mid morning. We should arrive at our lodge on the banks of the Orange River (460 km, approx 8-9 hours) by mid afternoon depending on the border crossing and photo stops along the way.

Traditionally known as the Gariep River, the Orange River is the longest in South Africa (2200 km). Its source is high up in the Drakensberg mountain range in Lesotho, and it flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay in South Africa. The Orange River is responsible for transporting diamonds and creating the deposits that can be found along the Namibian coast.

Day 4 Fish River Canyon

This morning after breakfast, we explore the beauty of the Orange River on a half-day canoe adventure through the Richtersveld Mountains, the oldest desert mountains in the world.

After lunch we will drive to the Fish River Canyon (350 km, approx. 5-6 hours) you'll notice a stark change in the landscape.

At 500 m (1,640 ft) deep and over 160 km (99 miles) long, Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world. There are spectacular photographic opportunities from the viewpoints, especially at dusk when some small mammals live here. Klipspringer antelopes and baboons as well as birds such as herons, hammerkops, plovers and wagtails are more commonly sighted.

Tonight we stay in a lodge with twin share rooms and private facilities.

Day 5 Sossusvlei

We make our way to the eastern edge of the Namib Desert (580 km, approx. 8-10 hours).

This is an amazing drive in terms of contrasting scenery with great photo opportunities around every corner. After arriving at the lodge and enjoying a refreshing swim in the pool, we take a short drive to enjoy sundowners and sweeping views of the Namib landscape.

Days 6-7 Swakopmund

We are up early the next morning as we venture into the heart of the Namib Desert. Here there is an opportunity to climb the world famous Dune 45 for unforgettable views over the desert. We explore the dunes on foot, enjoying a fascinating desert walk with a local guide who explains the huge variety of communities living in and on the sand, and what a simple animal track or spore can reveal.

While here we visit the world renowned Sossusvlei, an ancient lakebed in the middle of the desert with scattered skeleton camel thorn trees dating back over 1,000 years.

After lunch we depart for Swakopmund (320 km, approx. 5-6 hours) arriving in time for dinner.

The next day we are free to explore this attractive and historic town. Relax on the beach, take a walk to admire the German architecture, browse in the many boutiques or take part in the various adrenaline activities on offer.

Our accommodation in Swakopmund is in a hotel with private facilities.

Day 8 Windhoek

In the morning we head to Windhoek (360 km, approx. 5-6 hours), the capital of Namibia. We travel south, stopping to buy souvenirs from the local San and Herero people along the way.

Windhoek is a melting pot of the many different ethnic groups that live in Namibia and its colonial past is highly evident in the German-style architecture.

No accommodation is provided for tonight, but we are able to book you additional accommodation in Windhoek. Please ask at time of booking.
