Touws River
Touws River is the doorway to the Karoo. When driving along the N1 from Cape Town you will see an abrupt transition between the green valleys of the Southern Cape and the arid plains of the Karoo. Merino sheep farming is the main source of income in the Karoo. How the sheep survive in these harsh conditions with Karoo bush as their staple diet is a wonder. With an average farm size of 20000 hectares, it is even more incredible how the farmers manage to keep track of their flock.
Besides sheep farming, the town offers other interesting attractions such as a steam engine graveyard and the Loganda pillars, used for astronomical calculations in the late 1880. To the north is the popular Kaggakamma reserve with ancient bushman painting sites which are 6000 years old. The nature reserve is also home to a variety of wildlife.
