The Western Cape is widely known for its many majestic rural hamlets that boast riveting scenery as well as warm hospitality. The little village of Stanford is no exception, but for a small village tucked away in the Overberg region, there is a surprising amount of activities to enjoy for those holidaying in these parts. Found just inland from the enthralling False Bay coast, Stanford forms the tip of a triangle that includes the popular tourist seaside resort of Hermanus as well as the town of De Kelders.
While Stanford exudes tranquillity and a peaceful ambience, it features a number of shops, restaurants, art galleries, and cafes; its strong English roots, furthermore, makes it one of the most historically significant towns in the Western Cape. Like most Overberg enclaves, Stanford began as a farm known originally as de Kleine Riviers Valey; today, visitors can marvel at the wonderfully idyllic tree-lined streets found here and soak up it’s spectacular views and natural beauty. A focal point within the town is the market square; proclaimed as a South African Heritage area in 1995, the market square is the venue for the annual Welsh Show Pony Festival as well as the monthly country market.
The other must-see attractions in Stanford include the local Birkenhead Brewery which offers beer tasting and lunch, and the Klein River Dairy’s cheese shop which provides some truly delectable fresh produce. Nature lovers have to visit the Stanford Walking Trail, which meanders along the banks of the serene Klein River and provides excellent bird watching opportunities that include the endangered Blue Crane bird.
