The name 'Windmeul' derived from an old windmill that stood where the Windmeul Wine Cellar is at present. Windmeul is a small hamlet situated amongst farms and wine cellars on the R44, 7 km from Wellington and 7 km from Paarl, with a small school, post office, shop and church. Both the area and school is also named 'Slot van die Paarl' ('Close of Paarl') as this is where the main road coming from Paarl, used to end. Today this area (and the church) is also named 'Agter Paarl' ('Behind Paarl') because this little village is at the backside of Paarl Mountain.
