Klein Karoo
The Klein (or Little) Karoo is one of South Africa’s most intriguing and complex natural spectacles. Situated in the Western Cape Province and bordered by the intimidating, yet glorious peaks of the Langeberg and Swartberg Mountain ranges, the Klein Karoo is the southern neighbour of the larger Karoo – the Great or Groot Karoo – which finds its home in the north. At first glance, the Klein Karoo might seem arid with seemingly little life along its landscape, but spend some time there and a new world of diversity and colours will open before you revealing a land of majesty as well as dazzling aesthetic beauty.
The more time you spend in the Klein Karoo, the more you will start seeing a myriad of clear streams and imposing mountain peaks, with its landscape dotted with succulent aloes, dwarf baobab trees, and midsummer red tubular flowers. Spring time in the Klein Karoo is especially magical as the entire escarpment is transformed into a dazzling flora paradise that rivets many visitors and leaves them spellbound throughout their Karoo sojourn. But the Klein Karoo isn’t just known for its rare wild flowers; the area is also a renowned wine-producing region. The semi-arid climate along with a winter rainfall is largely responsible for the many micro-climates that occur here, which allow winemakers to produce a wide array of delicious wines; indeed, the Klein Karoo is very high up on the list of every wine connoisseur’s must visit places.
Furthermore, the Klein Karoo has a number of little country enclaves that make intermittent appearances the longer you travel through it namely Calitzdorp, Ladismith, and Uniondale which boast warm hospitality and stunning scenery; it is also in close proximity to bigger Western Cape towns such as Beaufort West, Laingsburg, and Oudtshoorn. Additionally, the wildly popular attractions of the Cango Caves and the Karoo National Park are within reasonable distance from many destinations within the Klein Karoo.
