Hout Bay / general information

Some basic history dictates that the early Dutch settlers explored behind Table Mountain and found a thickly wooded valley, with great fishing. With its abudance of timber this region soon became the primary area for ship building and repairs. It is not surprising then that Hout Bay's english translation is "Wood Bay".

Hout Bay boasts Chapman's peak drive - etched into a mountain which shows exquisite views of the sea and surrounds.

It is known for its buzzy atmosphere - the weekly Sunday craft market is very popular among residents. The harbour is always a hive of activity, with restaurants serving the latest catches of the day.

It is very conveniently situated - a 15 minute coastal drive will take you to the V & A Waterfront and a short drive inland will take you to the wine estates of Groot Constantia.
