The quaint little town of Agulhas is located a distance away from Cape Agulhas in close proximity to Cape Town. The area is more renowned for the geographical wonder that is Cape Agulhas, the true meeting point where the two oceans – the Atlantic and the Indian – meet instead of at Cape Point as most people assume. The coastal town of Agulhas is located at the most southern tip of the African continent.
The area itself is steeped in a rich history which dates back to the time when Bartholomew Diaz docked his boat on the shorelines of the Cape of Storms in the 17th century. The name Agulhas or L’Agulhas stems from the Portuguese language, meaning ‘Cape of Needles’. Its history is rather morbid in parts, its origins surrounding shipwreck survivors of various nationalities who ended up residing in this part of the world.
Agulhas’ location is ideal for any fishing enthusiasts, the shallow waters offering many opportunities to reel you in with so to speak. Then there’s also a range of water sports to occupy yourself with including surfing and boating to name but a few. Agulhas also has its very own National Park, containing more than 8500 species of fauna and flora rarely seen anywhere else in the world. So why not stop over at Agulhas on your next holiday? The one place on earth that really does offer the best of both oceans, literally.
